STUDENTS’ HANDOUT
OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this project is to:
(1) Help students better understand mathematical concepts and formulas by applying them in a fun and dramatic setting.
(2) Integrate math with competition, providing students with the opportunity to utilize both their cognitive and creative abilities.
(3) Provide a motivational strategy that will encourage an appreciation for mathematics.
The project is divided into two parts as follows:
DESIGNING A GAME:
MATERIALS REQUIRED:
As needed by each group for their prepared game.
METHOD:
1. The students can work in groups of 3 or 4.
2. They are asked to prepare a game (board game, card game, questions game, interactive game etc..) that must feature the mathematical concepts.
3. You must choose a name for your game and also mention the rules of the game.
4. It must be age appropriate (target grade levels 4 to 7) and fun to play.
5. Please make sure that your game should not take more than ten minutes when you execute it in the second part.
6. While designing the game keep in mind that it is competitive between two teams of three/four students each.
DUE DATE:
Your game should be submitted on the 12th of February, 2017.
ASSESSMENT:
The games are played in the class for proper assessment.
RUBRIC:
Use of age appropriate mathematical skills /5
Creativity /5
Aesthetics /5
Interaction of players /5
PART B:
EXECUTING THE GAME:
As this activity is being prepared for Grades 4 through 7 therefore make sure to follow the guidelines mentioned below:
1. The name of the game and the rules are clearly visible to the participants and are also read and explained to them.
2. The station is well-decorated and well-managed throughout the course of the activity.
3. Scores are recorded fairly and tokens are given to the winning teams.
4. A stationery/toy store will be set up for the students to purchase from in exchange of their tokens. Therefore bring small toys or stationery supplies as gifts to be kept in the store.
RUBRIC:
Neatness of the station /5
Execution of the game /5
Decoration of the Station /5
Management of the Teams /5
BEFORE THE MAIN EVENT
As there are 56 students from grade 4 through 7. Therefore they are divided in to four groups (Red, Yellow, Green and Blue), each group having 14 students. Each colored group is further divided into four sub groups (Red 1, Red 2, Red 3, Red 4, and so on…).
The students of these grades will be informed which group they belong to so that they can get a colored T-shirt of their colored group.
THE DAY OF THE MAIN EVENT
The games prepared by the students of grades 8 through 12 are placed on eight different stations (roughly two games on each station).
The schedule of the rotation of teams is given below so each team gets an opportunity to visit all the eight stations and also compete a different team at each station.
Some girls from grades 11 and 12 will be appointed to manage the shop and direct/guide the movement of the students between the stations.
The students will visit each station for a total of only ten minutes as the games are also designed for that time. After each ten minutes a whistle is blown to inform the students that they need to move on to the next station.
Each team will be given the order in which they have to visit each station. Each station will also have the schedule that which teams will visit them.
Upon completion of all the eight games the students can exchange their coupons and buy something from the shop. In case there is a team with no tokens some participation gifts will be given to them for motivation.
